The Seabus is unique in that it will be the only WIGE craft certified by IMO for use in Australian waters. The Seabus will provide unforeseen opportunities for commercial operators. It’s “flying boat” design enables it to land and take-off in sea states up to 600 mm. Moreover, due to the SB-8’s ability to use a portable modular docking system, passengers may board the craft near or around most City centres without the need of further infrastructure.
The cost per seat mile is significantly lower than all other forms of nautical and aviation transport apart from large displacement ships and with a corrosion-free, highly damage tolerant airframe and straight forward turbo-diesel engine the downtime will be minimal and lead to a greater residual value.
There are 8222 islands around Australia of which about 4% are checked on a regular basis, currently this is done primarily by boat but includes helicopter and fixed wing aircraft. The SB-8 is capable of enormous cost savings in this area. There are other logistic roles within the Military that the SB-8 could comfortably undertake.
There would be potential cost benefits for Companies undertaking contractual off-shore construction work where supplies and personnel rotation is required.
